Susan Sanders

Susan Sanders was born in 1835 at Chase Side, Enfield, the fourth child and second daughter born to shoemaker Edward Sanders and his wife Jane Draper.
By the age of 15 Susan was out in the work force, living as a servant in the home of Joseph Bennett, biscuit baker, and his wife Jemima.
On June 11, 1854, at St. Peters, Walworth, Susan Sanders married William Houlton, shoemaker. The couple had five children: William born 1855; Emma Susan born 1859; Ellen born 1863; Phoebe born 1868 and Frederick born 1875.

Some time in the mid-to-late 1870s, William Houlton died, and on October 12, 1879, Susan Sanders Houlton married widower Alfred Thomas Sharpe. Alfred was about eight years younger than Susan, not four as suggested on their marriage certificate when Alfred's age was given as 36 and Susan's as 40(she was actually 44)Alfred was a bricklayer who had married first wife, Jane Fowler, on Christmas Day, 1865, at Brompton Holy Trinity. Alfred and Jane had five children that I can find:- Harry born 1879; Charlotte, Janie, William and Alfred Thomas. Harry must have died in infancy, because in the 1871 census Alfred's and Jane's only child was a one month old daughter named Jane. The 1881 also mentioned a child named James Sharpe, aged 11, that I can't find a record for.

Susan Sanders Houlton Sharpe died at 14 Bolton Street, Kennington Park, Surrey, on July 20, 1904, aged 70. Probate of her will was granted to Fredrick Houlton, bootmaker, her youngest son from her first marriage. Susan's estate was worth just over seven hundred pounds.
