At Last...The Draper Story-murder and Quakers!

Now that I have completed the Sanders part of my story as far as I can for the time being, my attention can turn towards the Draper branches of the family tree. Everything begins with Jane Draper, my great-great-great-great grandmother. It was she who married Edward Sanders to produce Jane Sanders, the daughter who emigrated to Victoria in 1849 and married John Everard to become my three-greats grandmother.

For several years I had been sure that the Jane Draper who married Edward Sanders in 1827 was the daughter of shoemaker/cordwainer David Draper. I could find the baptisms of two brothers, David and Henry, but could not locate a baptism for Jane Draper anywhere. Then, several months ago, Ancestry.com.au acquired the wonderful London series of parish records, and BINGO!! There was my Jane Draper, the daughter of shoemaker David just as I had known but not proven.

The baptism record above shows that Jane Draper was baptised on December 16, 1810, at All Saints, Edmonton. She was born on November 17, 1810, the daughter of David Draper, a shoemaker, and his wife Jane
She was the first child born to David Draper and Jane Catling after their marriage the previous year..they were married on December 31, 1809, Old Church St. Pancras, London. I can find only two siblings for Jane...Henry born in 1813, and David born in 1816..( At least, I believe that Jane Draper's mother was Jane Catling...there are no other marriages of a David Draper to a Jane in the correct period, but until solid proof, this must be purely speculative for now)
Jane Draper was 26 years old when she married shoemaker Edward Sanders on April 9, 1827, at Tottenham. With Edward she had a family of five daughters and three sons:

Thomas Sanders baptised April 7, 1828.
Jane Sanders baptised April 7, 1830.
Henry Sanders baptised September 30, 1832.
Susan Sanders baptised October 2, 1835
Elizabeth Sanders baptised July 18, 1841
Emma Sanders baptised August 27, 1843
Sarah Sanders baptised December 5, 1847
Edward Sanders baptised February 17, 1850
All of these children were baptised at St. Andrews, Enfield.
I have dealt with the family of Jane Draper and Edward Sanders earlier in the Sanders part of my blog, so I will not record it again here. The exact page for the start of their story is:
In summary, Edward Sanders died in February 1863, aged 57 years. He was buried at St. Andrews, Enfield. His widow Jane married again eight months later...
On October 13, 1863, Richard Freeman, full age, widower; Gentleman; of John Street, son of John Freeman(deceased), gentleman; MARRIED Jane Sanders, full age; widow; same address; daughter of David Draper, gentleman. Witnesses: William Houlton (Jane's son-in-law) and Mary Ann Draper.

Richard Freeman's wife Lydia had died in 1861.
The 1871 census reveals that Jane Draper had left her native Middlesex and was living in Bedfordshire...there at Inkerman Street,Luton, Bedfordshire, were 60 year old Jane Freeman of Enfield and her 73 year old husband, Richard Freeman, a retired farmer who was a native of Baldock, Hertfordshire.
The marriage of Richard Freeman and Jane Draper Sanders lasted for almost nine years. Richard died on July 3, 1872, in Luton. Probate of Richard's will was granted to his son from his first marriage, John Freeman, of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. His effects were noted as being under 450 pounds.
After the death of her second husband, Jane returned to Chase Side, Enfield where she resided next to the family of her son, Edward Sanders. The 1881 census shows the following:
Chase Side:
Jane Freeman/ head/ widow/ 70/ house property/ born Edmonton
Next House:
Edward Saunders/ head/marr/ 31/ boot maker/ born Enfield
Elizabeth Saunders/ 32/ bootmaker's wife/ born Edmonton
Jane / daughter/ 11/ scholar/ born Enfield
Thomas/ son/ 8/ scholar/ born Enfield
Alfred/ son/ 5/ scholar/ born Enfield
Ann/ daughter/ 3/ born Enfield
Frederick/ son/ 9 months/ born Enfield
By 1891, Jane was living with the family of her daughter, Susan Sharpe, at Kennington, Lambeth. Susan had been widowed by the death of her first husband William Houlton some time after the 1881 census, and had remarried Alfred Thomas Sharpe, a widower bricklayer. Jane was recorded as "Jane Freeman/ mother-in-law/ widow/ 80/ living on own means/ born Enfield."
Jane Draper Sanders Freeman died at Kennington, Lambeth, in June 1892, and was buried at St. Andrews, Enfield, on June 29, 1892. Her age was recorded in the burial register as being 80 years, but being born in 1810, she was actually 81.
